Cow and Dog were neighbors. Cow lived in a very stuffy and dark cabin. Her house was quite run-down because she hadn’t repaired it since the last hurricane in the forest. A few years ago, when the hurricane came, many sheds and apartment blocks were destroyed.  All the forest animals except Cow restored their homes. Cow liked her unconventional house with its pink tiles and green bed linen. There were many different houses on Green Street, but Cow’s was the coziest and most attractive because of the good smell of food that Cow would always cook in her kitchen. The distinctive feature of Cow’s house was her hospitality.

Dog had a really stunning, airy studio-flat on the oak. His kitchen was incorporated into the room, and it looked very imposing.  One sunny day, Dog and Cow were sitting in the conservatory, drinking tea and talking.

-    You have an alluring flat, man, - said Cow, - the utilities must be very expensive.

-    Oh, no. Not at all. Do you know Turtle who lives near the wasteland? He has a really huge flat and probably pays a lot, - replied Dog.

-    Have you seen him recently? The vegetation in my garden is so abundant that I would like to share it with Turtle. I know he is interested. – said Cow.

-    No, I haven’t seen him in ages. He is said to have an uncle in New York, so maybe h’s moved.

-    To that crazy and bustling city? – Cow was surprised - No way! Believe me, even if Turtle moved, he would choose a quiet and secluded village.

Suddenly they both heard a strange noise. It was the sound of crockery, but nobody was supposed to be in the kitchen. Cow assumed that it was Turtle.

-    But Turtle has never been so loud and noisy, - said Dog.

-    Can you hear the lino creaking? It has to be somebody big, - suspected Cow.

Then they saw a shadow behind the blinds and guessed it was Elephant. But the kitchen was rather cramped and Elephant wouldn’t fit into it. Dog and Cow became really frightened and rushed to the sideboard to take some cutlery for protection.

-    What is the safest place? - asked Dog.

-    It must be the loft, - replied Cow and started climbing upstairs.

Suddenly they saw Crocodile coming into the room. He had returned from holiday and was looking for his friends. He made that noise in the kitchen and frightened Dog and Cow.

Later they laughed a lot and now their favorite proverb is “My home is my castle”.
